Now if I am entirely honest I didn’t realise this, but it turns out 26th November is Black Friday. I am not one for huge shopping sprees so Black Friday doesn’t particularly interest me, however, I know that tonnes of Americans and, more recently, Brits have really got on board with this weekend (Confusing right… how is a Friday a weekend?!).
With COP26 in recent weeks, we are all becoming more aware of our environmental impact, but what if I told you that your unnecessary purchases are actually having devastating consequences on the environment? In fact, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are some of the most polluting days in the retail calendar!
It doesn’t have to be this way though. If you, like many, use Black Friday as a chance to get ahead on your Christmas shopping, there are some really awesome sustainable options out there. Other than my own little pop-up shop, there are some more permanent shops out there such as the Eco Earth Market, run by a friend of mine named Conor. Oh, and by the way, you can get 20% off across the whole of Eco Earth Market by using the code LOTTIE.
Here are a few of my favourite products from Eco Earth Market that I use at home.
- Rice Husk Travel Cup
- Leak-Proof Lid
- Optimum Temperature for 90 Minutes
- Twin Walled
- BPA, Silicone and Melamime Free
I am getting to the point that I actually can’t leave for work without this cup! It is honestly one of my favourite coffee cups I own. They are made of rice husks which, unless properly disposed of, can become a biohazard. By utilising this waste material, they are innovatively using a waste product, preventing plastic usage and preventing a potential biohazard! Win, Win, Win! It is advertised as a leak-proof cup, and I have to say, it is one of the only “leak-proof” cups which is actually leak-proof! I did a bit of a daring experiment and left some coffee in the bottom of it and put it in my work bag! I am happy to report that after a walk (okay a run!), a bus journey and a short drive… no coffee leaked!! I am super impressed with this cup and recommend you check it out too.
- Plant-Based Cellulose Sponges
- Reduced Package Size by 90%
- Non Scratching
- Home Compostable
- Plastic Free
You know I am one for getting excited about simple little things, so you can imagine how I reacted when these strange flat cloths puffed up into full sponges when I rinsed them under the tap! These are perfect for anyone wanting a more conventional cleaning sponge, but doesn’t want the pesky non-biodegradable yellow ones you pick up at the supermarket. These are 100% compostable and are even safe to pop in the washing machine and use over and over again! I honestly love these, which isn’t something I ever thought I would say about a cleaning sponge. This might seem like a bit of a gimmick but there is actually a good reason as to why they “pop up”. They are dehydrated sponges as this reduces the size of the packaging needed and the space required for shipping, reducing the overall carbon footprint of the product!
- Alternative to Cotton Buds
- 100% Plastic-Free
- One Regular and One Beauty Swap Included
- Replaces Over 1000 Cotton Buds
- Food Grade Silicone
Whether you use cotton buds for your make-up or for other reasons, this cotton bud alternative is a great option. Not only are they cheaper than other brands, they are super well made, completely plastic-free and will save you over 1000 cotton buds! They come in a gorgeous magnetised bamboo box and all of the packaging is completely compostable. These are a must-have in my makeup bag and they help me keep my eyeliner nice and tidy! They are reusable but when you are finished with the Boobuds, the stem is completely biodegradable and you can be sure that while you are using them that they are totally safe as they are made with food-grade silicone.
- Eco Friendly Laundry Detergent
- 100% Natural
- No Soap Scum
- Ideal for Sensitive Skin
Did you know that regular cleaning products have lots of chemicals, fillers and fragrances that are damaging to your health and the waterways? If you are looking for a truly natural and sustainable solution to your laundry needs, these soap nuts are a great way to go. They seem a little quirky but it is honestly like magic! Soap nuts (or soapberries) are a traditional washing method that has been used in India and Pakistan for centuries. They grow on the Sapindus tree and when they get wet, release a soap-like product that is perfect for cleaning your clothes and also acts as a natural fabric softener. I know this all sounds a bit far fetched, and I was sceptical too, but they honestly work wonders! It is not surprising they are becoming more popular within the zero waste community for washing clothes! The added bonus of these are unlike regular detergents, they don’t release residues and soap scum which will extend the life of your washing machine and also makes them suitable for sensitive skin!
I hope you have enjoyed today’s post and check out Eco Earth Market and don’t forget to use the code LOTTIE for 20% off. Let me know in the comments what you are going to do to make your festive season a bit more sustainable.
