If you had told me a year ago that I would be writing a post about protein powder, I honestly wouldn’t have believed you. Why? Because I thought it was just for rich boys wanting to ‘bulk up’ or a gimmick weight loss product. But I have found out more recently, since giving myself a bit of a health kick, that protein powder can actually be a really useful product in anybody’s fitness routine.

You know that I am a firm believer that you don’t have to compromise your way of life in order to save the planet, so if you are a protein powder user, here are some zero- waste protein powder alternatives. Conventional protein powder has a clear problem with packaging, often coming in bulky plastic tubs. Additionally, if you have chosen to eat plant- based for the planet, many whey proteins will not be suitable for you – the most readily available in the shops. So what are some vegan- friendly, and sustainable protein powders? Keep reading to find out.

Quick note, I am not a dietician and neither am I suggesting you need to use protein powder, it is a totally personal choice and if you have questions make sure you have a chat with your GP or even a fitness coach.

What is protein powder?

It is very much what it says on the tin, a protein powder is a powdered form of protein thatwhich people use to supplement their diet. There are different ways this protein can be sourced, whether it is plant- based, like many on this list, or from egg or milk products.

What can you do with protein powder?

The most common way people consume protein powder is through shakes. They are easy to make and all you need to do is add water, milk or your favourite plant milk. Alternatively, you can get a little more creative and can mix the powder into porridge, pancakes or even brownies.

What are the benefits of protein powder?

Protein is one of the most important in building muscle, bone and skin. But did you know that there are more benefits of protein powders than just bulking up? Utilising protein powder can help you recover more quickly after a workout, to help aid weight loss. Some people even use protein powder to supplement their diet, in particular vegetarians, vegans, those with other dietary requirements or even breastfeeding mothers.
